It's been quite an interesting couple of days as there has been immense seismic activity around the Lake Taupo area, with a multitude of very shallow earthquakes occurring।
This is definitely a seismic swarm and as a colleague of mine mentioned it may not be such a bad thing as it will relieve a lot of pressure on the adjacent volcanoes.
Living an earthquake prone area, which the Hawke's Bay actually is, it is often reassuring to have small earthquakes rather than have large ones build and release pressure all in one go.
I recently installed a pretty basic amateur seismic station using a geophone I purchased an online auction hitched up to an extremely old National Monitor scope, not exactly the sort of setup I want but until someone with a generous heart donates me an oscilloscope or I can build up the money to afford one it will have to do.
I guess that's the basics of backyard science is making the best of what you have and improving it if you can.
One of the first devices to be installed as soon as we moved in was the weather station, I run a La Crosse 2350 hitched up to a laptop and have quite a few years of climatic data for the area, as one of my interests happens to be meteorology.
Having moved into a new house we are still in the process of sorting out a lot of things, but it has given me the opportunity to work on a lot of projects that I have in the past not bothered about.
I actually enjoy visiting a lot of the hack sites and getting ideas for modifying pieces of equipment and other items.
My wife is actually the one to look these things up as she tends to phrases her searchers more simply and come up with allot better results than I generally do. One of the more addictive site she found, and you may want to have a look at is:
http://www.wonderhowto.com/
they have some extremely wonderful ideas in all honesty I could get lost for hours with the vastness of information that is published on the site.
I have taken a look at a lot of the projects and will definitely be having a go at some of them. If you like tinkering, like me, you will certainly enjoy this site.
